Woman to stand trial, faces 5 years jail after being accused of lying about rape by football players

The trial of a 19-year old New York woman accused of making false rape allegations against two football players is due to commence this week in Connecticut.

According to a report by ABC 7, Nikki Yovino allegedly falsely accused two college football players of rape “to gain the sympathy of another student she wanted to date”. The claim was made in October 2016 when Yovino was a student at Sacred Heart University.

Authorities have said that after making the rape claims, Yovino later admitted that the sex with the players was consensual. She was then charged evidence tampering, a felony, and falsely reporting an incident, a misdemeanor. On the felony charge, she could face up to five years in prison if convicted.

An attorney for the players involved had this to say: “Her actions have seriously affected them… They’re no longer in school. The loss of their education and the college experience has certainly affected them greatly. And this is all because of a very serious lie.”
