Shark bites off swimmer’s penis on Brazilian beach; victim remains in critical condition
An 18-year old Brazillian male has had his penis bitten off by what is believed to have been a tiger shark after an attack at a beach near Recife, on Brazil’s northeast coast.
Jose Ernestor da Silva was attacked on Sunday afternoon in the waters of Piedade beach, a location that was the scene of another serious shark attack just 2 months ago that required a man’s hand and leg to be amputated. According to witnesses of the latest incident, lifeguards on the beach were preparing to alert swimmers to a shark sighting moments before Jose was attacked.
The victim was pulled from the water by other beachgoers and graphic cell phone footage has emerged showing their attempts to stem the blood. He was rushed by ambulance to a local hospital where doctors have said he has suffered two heart attacks as a result of his injuries. He currently remains in a critical condition.
Jose’s mother told Brazilian media that she did not he had gone to the beach, adding: “He would go in secret, because he knew that I thought it was dangerous. I wasn’t worried because I thought he was somewhere around the house… When I heard about it I went crazy, all the neighbours heard me screaming.”
The beach is notorious for shark attacks, with over 60 serious incidents being recorded since 1990, and the most recent in April of this year that left a male victim requiring multiple limbs to be amputated.
